Nathaniel lived on the homestead of his father Samuel in the Franklin area of Caldwell. In his early years he was prominently identified with the militia of the county and held the rank of Major.

Joseph Polhemus, (son of John Polhemus and his wife Elizabeth Robbins) was born 1779 and died 1855, buried in Silverton Cemetery. He inherited his uncle Nathaniel Polhemus' estate by will of 1802. Joseph sold this property in Upper Freehold and moved to Silverton section of Dover Township [NJ]. He married Freelove Woolley
(dau. of Levi) about 1802 and settled on a waterside farm which he bought and raised his children all born in Silverton. Joseph was said to have been a large landholder and gave much of the land to his children. They all lived in the Silverton [NJ] area. The name Polhemus Road is still in existence today in that area. The old Silverton church still sits in the almost same location as the first one stands. Several of the churches were burned due to forest fires. The cemetery was used by the Polhemus family and part of the land used for the cemetery was deeded to the elders of that church by Mary Chadwick Polhemus, wife of William Polhemus, he was a minister. I have a copy of this deed, which mentions that Joseph Polhemus, and John Polhemus were (and others were) Trustees of the Kettle Creek Methodist Meeting house. I also have record of one Bishop Asbury that traveled all over N.J., one of the places that he visited was the church at the Polhemus Saw Mill (this was owned by three brothers, William, John, and Joseph Polhemus.

...The Silverton, Cedar Grove and Old Methodist cemeteries were private family burial grounds before the Methodist circuit riders arrived.
SILVERTON CEMETERY
The history of the Silverton Cemetery begins with Joseph Polhemus, who apparently fell under the spell of the Rev. Benjamin Abbott, a missionary from England who expounded the principles of Methodism to the people of Toms River (NJ). Polhemus became a minister and started the Polhemus Society in 1797, at what was then known as Lawrence's Neck (Silverton).
It was probably Joseph, who married Freelove Woolley, who built a log chapel near the Polhemus Saw Mill in 1809 for a place of worship for the families along Kettle Creek to the bay. Bishop Francis Asbury preached to the Polhemus, Irons, Tilton, Clayton, Tice and McKelvey families at this site. Their cemetery lay on the higher ground east of the small log cabin. The oldest marker still standing is dated 1815, however evidence of earlier grave stones protrude out of the ground indicating that it was originally used as the Polhemus burial ground. Apparently the Polhemus Chapel became too small so in 1830, Mary Chadwick Polhemus Kelley, widow of William Polhemus, conveyed a new site for a chapel. The new chapel was located in what is now the road-bed of Hooper Avenue and was called the Kettle Creek Meeting House.

A letter from John Wilbur Clayton, 39 Johnson Road, West Orange, NJ, dated Jan. 18, 1936, states:
"At present I am given to understand that Joseph Polhemus (1779 - 1858) (sic) exchanged lands at or near Cream Ridge, NJ, 25 or 30 miles north west of Silverton, for property at Silverton. This, at the time of Joseph's death was 500 acres and was split by Orphan's court Commissioners, and sold, and the proceeds distributed among Joseph's eight children or their assignees." Nathaniel and Rachel kept their eighth but John H. Clayton, uncle of Lucy Ann (Clayton) Polhemus bought the share of Joseph's son, Joseph, and James Totten Polhemus, bought the share of his aunt, Elisabeth, Joseph's daughter. So James Totten Polhemus and John H. Clayton filed case No. 199 in the Surrogate's office at Toms River asking that the shares be sold and titles be issued. J. Wilbur Clayton reports that his brother hinted that the reason Joseph traded good arming land at Cream Ridge for land not so good--but more acres--at Silverton, was that he liked to hunt ducks so well.... It included the "Cove" where James Totten Polhemus used to maneuver his sailing scow – the "Lucy of Silverton" - out and in, to and from freighting trips on Barnegat Bay, and where he used to take "all the neighbors" once a year across to the beach and delight the childish soul of his youngest daughter Ida.

That was the year that General Clinton took Stony Point, a place of strategic importance. That was the year when Gov. Tryon of New York, with Loyalist troops, carried fire and sword over Connecticut giving ground for that State to demand and receive Western lands from the Constitutional Convention eight years later.
Mrs. David Veeder of Toms River, NJ writes: Freelove and Joseph Polhemus lived out their days on the waterside farm at Silverton, NJ. Mrs. Elias Clayton of Silverton, descendent of Joseph and Freelove, tells me that Freelove met her death through an injury caused by an angry rooster that flew up in her face and raked her temple. General Notes: ABRAHAM PAULHAMUS was born, September 20, 1805, in what is now Hepburn
township, Lycoming county, Pennsylvania. His father migrated from New Jersey to Looming county and bought land from the State of Pennsylvania in what is now Hepburn township, and improved the same. His family consisted of five sons and three daughters, Upon reaching his majority, Abraham learned the blacksmith trade which he followed for some time at Hepburnville. He afterward carried on this business at Williamsport, on the corner of Fourth and Williams streets where the residence of J. R. Otto now stands. After following his trade for some time in that city he removed his shop to Hepburnville, where he carried on business for a number of years. He finally had to give up his trade on account of his eyes failing, and about the year 1888 he located on the Packer farm; here he engaged in farming ,in connection with butchering for two years, having John Bredin as a partner in the latter business. In 1840 he took charge of the Park farm in the vicinity of Williamsport, and in 1842 he moved to the John K. Hays farm on Lycoming creek, where he remained for eight years. He then moved to the Grier farm. His death -occurred on the 23d of September, 1853. He was a Whig and a strong Abolitionist. Mr. Paulhamus was largely instrumental in building the Beantier Run methodist chapel in Lycoming Township, and was for many years a class-leader of the same. His wife, whom he married September 30, 1831, was Susan Marr, whose parents came from New Jersey and located at Milton, Pennsylvania. To this union were born six sons and three daughters; two of whom are living: John and Maberry Goheen.
